Scientists raise alarm as world's oceans hit highest recorded temperature in 2023

The world's oceans have reached a concerning milestone, with their temperatures hitting an unprecedented 20.96°C—the highest ever recorded. Data from the EU's Copernicus programme reveals the escalating impact of climate change on Earth's vital water bodies.

This troubling trend shows that average sea temperatures have been steadily rising since the 1970s due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases. These gases trap heat, turning the oceans into what experts describe as a 'bath,' intensifying the greenhouse effect and leading to various repercussions.

Warmer oceans have reduced their ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, increasing the presence of this greenhouse gas in the air. Additionally, rising temperatures cause more evaporation, leading to heavier rainfall and a higher risk of flooding.

Marine ecosystems are also under threat due to ocean warming, resulting in ocean acidification that puts marine life like corals and clams at risk as their calcium carbonate shells dissolve. Corals are also susceptible to bleaching caused by warmer temperatures, which has already caused extensive damage to delicate coral reefs.

The disturbing news follows an already record-breaking June and a series of extreme weather events, including heatwaves and wildfires. Experts attribute these unsettling statistics to human-made greenhouse gas emissions, emphasizing the urgent need for robust climate action.

As July 2023 is expected to be the hottest month on record for global air surface temperatures, the urgency for meaningful intervention cannot be overstated. The World Meteorological Organization's Secretary-General warns that the current extreme weather is a "foretaste of the future" without prompt action to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

As the world faces the tangible impacts of climate change, UN Chief Antonio Guterres's warning of an "era of global boiling" underscores the critical need for immediate and sustained efforts to combat this escalating crisis. Swift action and global cooperation are imperative to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change and protect the health of our oceans and planet.
