Attock jail officials told to provide medical facilities to Imran Khan, allow meetings with family & friends

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has instructed Attock Jail officials to ensure that former Prime Minister Imran Khan receives proper medical care and is allowed to meet his friends and family in accordance with legal provisions. The court also emphasized the provision of a prayer mat and an English version of the Holy Quran for Khan.

Imran Khan, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was recently found guilty of concealing state gift details in the Toshakhana case and was sentenced to three years in prison. He was taken to Attock Jail in Punjab province.

Although the trial court had initially ordered his arrest by Islamabad police, he was apprehended by Lahore police. The court had also directed Adiala Jail to receive Khan, but he was taken to Attock Jail instead. In Attock Jail, Khan was provided with B-Class facilities by the Punjab prisons department.

Khan has requested permission for regular visits from his legal team, family members, physician Faisal Sultan, and political aides. Concerns about Khan’s safety in Attock Jail have been raised by PTI lawyers.

The IHC, in a written order, referred to Rule 92 of the Pakistan Prison Rules 1978 (PPR), which states that convicted prisoners should have reasonable opportunities to interview relatives, friends, and legal advisors for the purpose of preparing appeals. Interviews should be conducted within sight but out of hearing of supervising prison officials.
